Sports Betting for Beginners: The Complete Nigerian Guide (2026)

By Kelechi Kelvin Abel | Published: 8 March 2026 | Updated: 8 March 2026

Sports betting in Nigeria is a ₦730 billion industry. Over 60 million Nigerians participate in some form of betting. And it's growing every year.

But here's the problem. Most beginners jump in without understanding the fundamentals: how odds work, what markets to choose, how to manage their money.

This guide covers everything a complete beginner needs to start betting responsibly and intelligently.

What Is Sports Betting?

Sports betting is placing a wager on the outcome of a sporting event. If your prediction is correct, you win money. If it's wrong, you lose your stake.

A bookmaker (like Bet9ja) sets the odds for each possible outcome. These odds determine how much you win relative to your stake. The bookmaker builds a margin into every price: that's their profit.

In Nigeria, sports betting is fully legal and regulated by the National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC). There are 37 licensed operators.

How Betting Odds Work

Bet9ja uses decimal odds. The calculation is simple:

Potential Return = Stake × Odds

₦1,000 × 2.50 = ₦2,500 (₦1,500 profit + ₦1,000 stake back)

Every odds price has an implied probability:

Decimal OddsImplied Probability₦1,000 Stake Return
1.2083%₦1,200
1.5067%₦1,500
2.0050%₦2,000
3.0033%₦3,000
5.0020%₦5,000
10.0010%₦10,000
